If you would like to buy an affordable wide gamut monitor for photo editing, I can recommend from my own experience the HP LP2475w. It is a 24 inches wide screen monitor and is able to cover 100% of the Adobe RGB and beyond. In Europe it is available for around 500 incl. tax. Currently no other back-lighted LCD in its price range can cover such large color gamut.
The HP sports a S-IPS panel.
However the quality control of this one seems to be a bit gambling-liked. My first one has a disturbing green-to-pink tint and very noticeable uneven backlighting. Besides it has some smaller issue, incl. a strong lag and fragmented screen in combination with my Mac Pro. The exchange panel is on contrary almost flawless and is also almost as good as my EIZO.
