Prerequisites:
Education or Training—High school diploma is
required; technical training in mechanics at trade school
or two-year associate’s degree in mechanics recommended
Experience—Two to five years as a maintenance and
repair apprentice to an experienced mine mechanic
Special Skills and Personality Traits—Ability to follow
blueprints, schematic drawings and diagrams, and
service manuals; capable of setting up and operating
metalworking machinery/tools used in repair; good physical
condition; mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity
Special Requirements—Certification of competency
from the individual state’s Miners’ Examining Boards is
usually required

Tips for Entry :
1. During high school, investigate summer jobs or internships
in manufacturing environments where you can
gain practical experience working with and learning
how to maintain/repair machinery and equipment.
2. Besides your mechanical abilities, develop your computer
skills, as much present-day coal-mining equipment
is automated to some extent, which will affect
your maintenance and repair tasks.
3. Consider initial employment in a manufacturing environment
to become (better) acquainted with machine
maintenance and repair techniques and technologies.
