Find, extract, and prepare coal for use by manufacturing
industries and power utilities

Prerequisites:
Education or Training—Bachelor’s degree in mining
engineering or in a related engineering discipline is
required; a master’s degree in an allied engineering discipline
is recommended
Experience—Entry-level engineer’s work for three to
five years under the supervision of seasoned engineers
before becoming full-fledged Mining Engineers
Special Skills and Personality Traits—Analytical and
detail-oriented; creative and inquisitive; capable of critical
thinking and operations analysis; excellent communication
(both oral and writing) and interpersonal abilities;
solid mathematics and computer skills
Special Requirements—Licensing as a Professional
Engineer (PE) is required

Tips for Entry :
1. Along with your mining engineering program, include
courses in speech and technical writing to augment
your verbal and writing proficiency.
2. Add one or more languages other than English to
enhance your job potential.
3. Expand your computer knowledge to include familiarity
with applications and programming, as well as
computer-aided design (CAD) techniques, as you will
need such know-how as a Mining Engineer.
